Hello, I’m Dana Berry, owner of danadoodleknits. I currently live in Brooklyn with my husband (Ty) and our two cats (Socks and Boots) in our fourth floor apartment. I spend most of my time knitting, panicking about the future, and trying to figure out how to be an adult while pretending I know what I’m doing.
I was born in New England in a nice suburban town, in a nice suburban house, to two wonderful parents and two older siblings. I lived there until college (with one exception) then I moved to Washington, DC to study Biology at the George Washington University. I soon after met my now husband, Ty, and spent the next several years finishing school and working in the DC area. In 2012 we moved to New York City and I started a PhD program in Immunology, less than two years in I decided to finish with my masters instead and move from the bench to the office. I now work at an open access publisher, BioMed Central. (If you’re also interested in publishing and science-y stuff you can follow me on twitter @DanaBerryBMC)
Knitting has been with me since I learned in Girl Scouts my freshman year of high school, and I’ve hardly put it down since. I’ve been designing since the minute I finished my first project, and without any other knitters around me, and very few resources, I taught myself mostly through trial and error until college. Being in a knitting group at GWU, I discovered the real world of knitting. I learned about Ravelry, LYS’s, the Yarn Harlot, what gauge was, and the fact that there is a whole community around knitting. Since then I’ve learned so much more about knitting, the fiber industry, what sort of designer I want to be, and have made some of my best friends because of knitting.
