I heart Ravelry

Posted on November 10, 2014 by

The other night at La Casita we were talking about a few different designers and their new patterns, using Ravelry on our ipads for visual aids. I happened to be sitting next to a newcomer and while I was browsing Ravelry on my own ipad, she leaned over and asked me what the big deal was about Ravelry. She’d used it before to look at patterns, but she didn’t really “get it”. Well, she might have been a little sorry that she asked me that question, because I proceeded to show her the amazing features of Ravelry for about the next 15 minutes.

I think my top three favorite things about Ravelry are the pattern search, my project pages, and my stash. I’ve extolled the virtues of the favorites feature before, the fact that you can narrow down to the exact sort of pattern you want, like a fingering weight cardigan with lace that doesn’t use more than 1200 yards. And now that I’ve save the pattern search of my favorite designers, I can keep up to date with what they’ve published.

But the ability to document every pattern and every skein in your stash is so unbelievably useful, and I’m often reminded of that fact when I go to look at one or the other and I haven’t updated it in a few weeks. Keeping track of my stash helps when I’m not at home and wondering about that new pattern I saw and what I could use from my stash. And have you ever had someone ask you about something you’re wearing, what the pattern/yarn is, what needle size you used, what modifications you made? Yeah, well, I can use Ravelry for all of that instead of relying on my horrible memory.

There are so many other aspects of Ravelry that I don’t use often, like the forums, but I know that others are on them religiously. What are your favorite features of Ravelry?
